Fey first broke into humor as a featured player in the Chicago-based improvisational comedy group The Second City. She subsequently joined “SNL” as a writer, after becoming head writer and a performer, known for her place as co-anchor in the “Weekend Update” section. In 2004, she co-starred in and wrote the screenplay for “Mean Girls,” which was partially adapted from a novel. In the show, Fey impersonates the head writer of a fictional sketch comedy show. In 2008, she starred in the comedy film “Baby Mama”, alongside former “SNL” co star Amy Poehler.

In 2008, the Associated Press (AP) granted Fey the AP Entertainer of the Year award for her satirical portrayal of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin in a guest appearance on “SNL”. In 2010, Fey was the receiver of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the youngest-ever winner of the award. On January 13, 2013, Fey hosted the 70th Golden Globe Awards along with her longtime friend and fellow comic, Amy Poehler. Their performance was critically acclaimed. The couple hosted again the following year to similar acclaim, creating the best ratings for the annual service in ten years.
